The Korean woman writer Hwisu’s latest book is a bilingual Korean/English collection of poems and poetic prose pieces all of which are, as the writer herself says, “contemplative about life.” For those, like me, who do not read Korean, the book is a welcome introduction to Hwisu’s thought-provoking ways of looking at life, love, happiness, and sadness.

Hwisu is ever attentive to the special nature of things as ordinary as a rice bowl, a sunset, a dawn breeze with her sense that all of them “contain a song worth singing.”

 

The poems are emotionally moving especially in their grasp of what Hwisu calls “a fundamental sadness” which is “learned naturally.” At times there is an irony of tone in the presentation, as in “Empty House” from which the phrases above are taken: “In the evening when the sun sets without permission and no one comes, you enter the empty, heavier house, where darkness is added as a bonus.”

 

Though sadness, loneliness, loss predominate in the book, there are flashes of humor here and there, as when in “A Polite Day,” where the speaker grants the body’s every wish until “When he wanted coffee,/I pretended not to know it./Sorry but/I did something I wasn’t sorry for.”

 

In addition to the verbal component, the book includes photographs presumably taken by Hwisu herself to reinforce some of the ideas and feelings in the accompanying writings.

 

In a major part of her contemplations about life, Hwisu shows herself as a keen observer and analyst of the complexities, ironies, and paradoxes that imbue relationships of all kinds with deeper meaning. Hwisu’s writing will bring readers to a closer examination of self and relationship, feeling and thought, and I highly recommend it.

한국의 여성 작가 휘수의 최신 책은 한국어/영어 양방향 시와 시적 수필의 모음집이며, 작가 자신이 말하듯이 '인생에 대해 사색하는' 작품들로 구성되어 있습니다. 저와 같이 한국어를 읽지 않는 사람들에게는, 이 책은 인생, 사랑, 행복, 슬픔에 대한 휘수의 생각을 이중 언어 방식으로 소개하고 있습니다.

 

휘수는 밥그릇, 일몰, 새벽바람과 같이 평범한 어휘들 속에 숨어 있는 독특한 의미에 대해 항상 주의를 기울이며, 그 모든 것들이 "노래할 가치가 있는 무언가를 담고 있다"고 느낍니다.

 

시들은 특히 휘수가 '자연스럽게 학습되는' '근본적인 슬픔'을 파악하고 있다는 점에서 감동적입니다. 때로는 아이러니 어조가 나타납니다. 시, '빈집'에서 가져온 구절처럼: '허락 없이 해는 지고 누구 하나 오지 않는 저녁, 어둠을 덤으로 담아내어 더 묵직해진 덩그러니 빈집으로 어린 네가 들어간다.'

 

책에서는 슬픔, 외로움, 상실의 의미가 지배적이지만, 여기저기서 유머의 반짝임이 있습니다. '공손한 하루'에서 화자는 몸의 모든 소원을 충족시키지만 '커피를 원할 때, / 그것을 모른 척했다. / 미안하지만 / 미안하지 않은 일을 한 것이었다.'고 합니다.

 

어휘적 요소 외에도, 이 책에는 아마도 휘수가 직접 찍은 듯한 사진들이 포함되어 있어 글의 아이디어와 정서를 일부 강화합니다.
